Course Description

This course is an elective for students who find their own opportunity to participate in a (usually) unpaid Work Integrated Learning Internship, with an organisation.. Under this elective, students are expected to work around 120 hours in total. This can be undertaken at one time, for example 3-4 weeks full-time, or spread across a period of time, for example, this may be 1-2 days per week for 8-12 weeks.

Process Requirements:

After enrolment and before commencement of the internship, the following must be completed:

  1. You are responsible for securing your own internship.
  2. The position must be approved by the Course Coordinator.
  3. A WIL Relationship Agreement must be completed by the host organisation, student and RMIT University.
  4. The internship and associated documents must be recorded in the university’s InPlace WIL system.
  5. International internships must be registered through RMIT Global Mobility’s Mobi system.
  6. Assessment requirements should be read and understood prior to commencing your internship.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Students should achieve the following learning outcomes:


 During the placement period, students will complete graded assessments that meet the following course learning objectives: 

  • CLO1: Meeting the generically accepted work requirements of punctuality, appropriate and respectful internal and external communications, good work ethic, and visible effort.
  • CLO2: Meeting the expectations and objectives of their position and demonstrate the quality of work outcomes.
  • CLO3: Integrate and apply RMIT studies to current business practice, through guided experiential learning in a business context, under supervision and/or support.
  • CLO4: Demonstrate the capacity to work individually and collaboratively in/for a business or organisation.
  • CLO5: Undertake reflective praxis in reviewing the value of the work-based project or placement.
  • CLO6: Showcase and communicate your enhanced employability skills.

You will be actively engaged in practical learning in a workplace. Key learnings, guidance and instruction will be facilitated by a supervisor in the workplace. It is expected that you should leverage from the experiences and make the most of the internship opportunity. You can expect to receive feedback from their workplace supervisor.

The assessment tasks, their weighting and the course learning outcomes to which they are aligned are as follows:

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or in online forums through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
